    <abstract>The survey on mapping of supply of health services in the Centre region, Burkina Faso was conducted by the Directorate General of Health Information and Statistics (DGISS) with technical and financial support from the World Health Organization (WHO). It is a snapshot of the supply of health services that has made it possible to identify health facilities and to assess their characteristics in terms of personnel, services, equipment, and quality of their services. The objective of the survey was to conduct a comprehensive review of health services including national standards related to logistics, personnel, basic equipment, drugs and to make the results and data available to the Ministry of Health, donors and other users. 

A census of health facilities, pharmacies and laboratories was conducted between December 2009 and January 2010. 

This report presents results on general characteristics of the facilities (typology, general capacity, location, etc.), services and staff available, and means of treating emergencies and risks of infection.</abstract>

    <notes>The SAM is designed to support decision making by providing national and district planners with the skills and tools to routinely map services and resource availability. Designed as a district-owned system, SAM can be implemented as a standalone system or integrated into the routine health information system as a supervisory tool. As a monitoring tool, SAM is recommended every six months to one year. The frequency of implementation may be adjusted to suit program needs when utilized as a periodic evaluation tool. The facility SAM covers availability of the health equipment, staffing, drugs and commodities, and the services offered. The District SAM covers health infrastructure, human resources, and services available in the district.</notes>

      <resInstru>For this assessment, the standard SAM questionnaires were adapted to country context. Three types of questionnaires were used depending on the nature of the establishments: the basic questionnaire, the pharmacy questionnaire and the laboratory questionnaire.

The basic questionnaire for health care facilities has eight modules 
1. Infrastructure and general capacity 
2. Equipment 
3. Infection control 
4. Health personnel 
5. Services available which include child health services, blood transfusions, malaria control, and other services, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, etc.
6. Training and guidelines 
7. Drugs and products
8. Laboratory

The pharmacy questionnaire administered in private dispensing pharmacies consists of two modules:
1. General information module which provides an overview of the human resources in the pharmacies, pharmacies and pharmaceutical warehouses
2. Medicines and pharmaceutical products module which presents in detail the availability of essential medicines in the pharmaceutical establishment. 

The laboratory questionnaire administered to managers of biomedical analysis laboratories includes only one module on general capacity, which reviews the different examinations that can be performed in the laboratory. These can be biochemical, haematological or virological examinations.</resInstru>

      <collSitu>Training of enumerators and supervisors was conducted before data collection. The survey team comprised of statisticians and health actors such as the managers of the Center for Health Information and Epidemiological Surveillance (CISSE) and health attachés in epidemiological health officers. In the field, the enumerators worked in two-person teams (usually consisting of a health worker and a statistician). Supervisors regularly monitored regularly by enumerators during data collection. The data collection phase lasted for 20 days.</collSitu>

      <cleanOps>The SAM data are entered using personal digital assistants (PDAs) and the data in the PDAs is transferred to a computer. Once the data are in the computer, structure checking and completeness as well as checking of the double data entry and data entry errors are checked.</cleanOps>
